as i was rowing the mileage set today, i thought abt game theory.

no, i dint let my mind drift, but wad i felt was that Prisonner's Dilemma actually happens in reality.

For those who dun understand, its ok. Dun read further, i'd juz bore u.

Anyway, point is, the best outcome is if both boats don't retaliate. However, the reverse occured, ie both retaliate. Nash Equilibrium (both retaliate) occurs becoz it is the outcome given that u've considered ur opponent's move. No one will profitably deviate from such a strategy.

When sir asked both boats to stay close, the best outcome for all wld have been: (Dont retaliate, dont retaliate). However, due to Prisonner's Dilemma, a Nash Equilibrium situation occured: (retaliate, retaliate)

Retaliate= push 10
Don't retaliate= row as per normal

Somehow at the end of the set i was left wondering who we were really competing against. And if it was indeed worthwhile retaliating coz when an up 10 is called, u juz do it w/o questioning.

1stly, by retaliating, 1 boat will always be behind the other. 2ndly, retaliation almost always lead to the following scenario:

or??

i'm confused. maybe i shdn't think too much. or shd i say, too deep.

  • i guess its how you see it ba. cos once someone starts retaliating.. the other can't just sit around.. morale'd go low or something.. maybe thats why there's always a competition. The competition sometimes gets too intense tho.
